| Biography
Singer/songwriter Mitra Rahbar began her involvement with music, voice, dance and theater as a child in Iran. In the 1980's, Mitra joined the AVAZ Dance Theater in Los Angeles, where she trained and performed for two years. Pursuing her passion for Indian khatak dance, Mitra began training with Master Chitrish Das and associate Susan Duckett. From there, Mitra went to form her own dance company, where she choreographed, performed, and taught dance for many years. On a trip to Virginia in 1990, Mitra met James McCully and studied operatic vocal technique with him for a short period of time. Later in Los Angeles, she furthered her private vocal training with Gail Gordan and for a limited time, studied with Tony Silva. In mid 1990's, Mitra created her first album, "The Sun Shines In You", with renowned new age composer Randall Leonard. Shortly after, Mitra visited Iran and met with legendary Persian folk singer, Pari Zangene. Inspired to sing Persian folk songs in her own style, Mitra made her second album entitled "Persian Treasures" with her husband, Rama Morovati. From that point onwards, she familiarized herself with Afghan songs and Persian folk poetry and thus, began her own unique style of singing and music: a tapestry of spoken words and music transcending cultural boundaries. Slowly in time, Mitra and Rama created their own unique style of music by blending Indian, Persian, Flamenco, and New Age styles. These creations were brought together in the body of Mitra's newest album, "Nirvana". Also, Mitra's works can be heard on film soundtracks (e.g. Spartacus, The Olive Harvest, Shanghai Red), as well as various compilation albums. She has had the honor of singing for Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Shirin Ebadi and Senator Hilary Clinton, and has performed at various events and prestigious organizations, such as the United Nations.
